DirectX games gallery and my test results

I always used the original game versions with some potential official patches made to get them to run on WinXP or later Win OS.
These tests do not include any hacked GoG/Steam game versions.

This list is quite short now, I've just chose some games randomly, but it is continuously (and slowly) being expanded.

Another World

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:n.a.
Wrapper settings:Default
Game seems to be software rendered (nice vector graphics and cutscenes!), so no antialiasing is available.

Aquanox

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default
The game has internal option for enabling MSAA (FSAA).

Balls of Steel

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:Makes no sense
Wrapper settings:Default
It's a DirectDraw game so resolution forcing works but won't add anything to the rendering quality.

BlastThru

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:Makes no sense
Wrapper settings:Default
It's a DirectDraw game so resolution forcing works but won't add anything to the rendering quality.

Blood 2

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default
You need the patched executable if want to set high resolutions in-game. Also, you may experience some fps drops with dynamic lighting enabled.

BloodRayne

Status:Playable
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:non-Default
You have to launch this game in forced windowed mode and switch to fullscreen manually when it gets to the menu. Otherwise it stops with a DX8 error message at the beginning.

BloodRayne 2

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default

Breath of Fire 4

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default
Needs the patched executable for playing it through dgVoodoo.

Chaser

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default

Chicken Invaders

Status:Playable
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:Makes no sense
Wrapper settings:Default
Software rendered, so resolution forcing make little sense.
Doesn't survive Alt-Tab, exits with an error message when trying to switch back.

Chrome

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default

Chrome Specforce

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default

Colin McRae Rally

Status:OK
Resolution override:Slight menu glitch
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default

Commandos 3 - Destination Berlin

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:Slight 2D glitches
Wrapper settings:Default
Most of the game is 2D-tile rendered with some 3D objects so MSAA makes little sense here.
Resolution forcing causes the 2D map to be pixelated which can be compensated by forced bilinear filtering, but that results in font glitches.
Also, there are some minor (lighting?) glitches but I don't know if they are dgVoodoo-specific or not.

Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project - Demo

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default
(Using the DX8 renderer, of course)

Dungeon Keeper 2 (patched to v1.7)

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default
Resolution forcing with integer scale factor (ISF) seems to give the best results (eliminates text glitches).
Forcing bilinear texture filtering smoothes out scaled texts but also brings back the slight text glitches.

Elf Bowling The Last Insult

Status:Not so OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default
As if I got slight texture glitches with forced MSAA, but the game has internal support for that if Graphics Quality is set to 'High', it seems to be OK.
It's hard to get back to the game after Alt-Tabbing out.

Enclave

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default

Extreme G-2

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:Slight font glitches
Wrapper settings:Default
Like for Incoming, video card type 'ATI 8500' gives nicer HUD appearance than the others.

Farscape The Game

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default

Grandia 2

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default

Giants - Citizen Kabuto

Status:OK
Resolution override:see remarks
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default
If resolution is forced then you get to the game error screen (DXErr 8876086C) prior to the main menu.
I should investigate this one.

Grand Theft Auto III

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default

Hitman 2 - Silent Assassin

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default
The game has internal option for enabling MSAA.

Hitman 3 - Contracts

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default

I Was an Atomic Mutant

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default

Incoming

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default
Altough the game works by the default settings, you may want to change the videocard type to 'ATI 8500' because that has different colorkeying method than the others and gives nicer HUD appearance.
It's too pity that this game is locked to 30FPS.

Lego Island

Status:Not so perfect
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default
You need D3DRM.dll for this game.
The game doesn't survive Alt-Tab.
Also, the mouse seems to 'work better' if the game is launched in forced windowed mode and switched back to fullscreen later.

Lego Island 2

Status:Not so perfect
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default
The initial video doesn't show up.
Also, it seems the game can't be Alt-Tabbed out.

Megaman X8

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default

Mortyr

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default

Motocross Madness

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default
This game always goes through the 'video card detection' process at startup, for some reason, which can take some time and display blinking.
Other than that it is OK.

Motocross Madness 2

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default
I got reports about corrupted rendering, missing particle system or shadows.
I may miss something but this game work for me.
'Single pass' option for terrain rendering is available only if graphics settings is invoked from an event, though.

Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default

No One Lives Forever

Status:OK
Resolution override:Font glitches
MSAA:Font glitches
Wrapper settings:Default
Game cursor loses its bitmap after returning from Alt-Tab.

No One Lives Forever 2

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default
Yoy may get font glitches with forced resolution or MSAA but it didn't occur in my test.

Pariah

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default

Rayman 2 Demo

Status:Playable
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default
Can't restore textures from Alt-Tab. Also, in-game resolution selecting causes crash, but forced resolution can be used instead.

Rayman 3 Demo

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default

RC Cars

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default
Do not use DDraw.dll for initial movie playback because it crashes for some reason. Other than that, the game is OK.

Resident Evil

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:Slight 2D glitches
Wrapper settings:non-Default
This game should be run with the 'ATI 8500' preset because it has problems with the presence of paletted texture support.
Forcing the game into high resolution gives nice rendering of the 3D-characters, however the 2D backgrounds remain low-res and pixelated.

Resident Evil 2

Status:No movies
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default
You need my patched executables to utilize hardware accelerated rendering. Those exe's are of the US 1.4 version but I think I could patch other versions too.
You should select 320x240 game resolution and scale that up to a much higher one through dgVoodoo. Selecting 640x480 gives rendering into a rect (320x240) in the center of the screen.
Movies are Indeo which is not yet supported by dgVoodoo so they won't show up.

Shadow Man

Status:OK
Resolution override:n.a.
MSAA:Slight 2D glitches
Wrapper settings:Default
Resolution override is refused for some reason.

Shogo Mobile Armor Division

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default
You may experience some fps drops with dynamic lighting enabled.

Silent Hill 3

Status:OK
Resolution override:see remarks
MSAA:see remarks
Wrapper settings:Default
If resolution or MSAA is overridden then fading screens show a 'sliding effect' due to the technique used in the game.
I don't think it's a major issue, can be liven with, but in competition, the game looks fantastic at high resolutions.

Soul Reaver

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default
Needs patched Winplay.dll to avoid crash for resolutions other than 640x480.

Soul Reaver 2

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default

Suzuki Alstare Extreme Racing

Status:OK
Resolution override:Font glitches
MSAA:Font glitches
Wrapper settings:non-Default
This game should be run with the 'ATI 8500' preset to avoid paletted textures which causes crash. The other choice, the patched executable can be used with other video card types and so with default wrapper config.

Star Wars Republic Commando

Status:Minor problems
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:Slight font glitches
Wrapper settings:Default
The game gets dropped into windowed mode if any graphical settings is applied in the Options menu.
Maybe it's better to play it with enabling manual screen mode setting.
The game has built-in MSAA support which works well.
I'm not sure if the bump mapping looks the same as it did on a contemporary hw.

The House of the Dead 2

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:Slight 2D glitches
Wrapper settings:Default
Forcing this game to high resolution gives very nice appearance, especially with forced bilinear texture filtering.

The Punisher

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default
Maybe glitches on character shadows?
Also, the game doesn't seem to be super steady. Sometimes it gets stuck when loading a level but I'm not sure if its has something to do with dgVoodoo.

Tomb Raider 2

Status:OK
Resolution override:Slight 2D/menu glitches
MSAA:Slight 2D/menu glitches
Wrapper settings:Default

Tomb Raider 3

Status:OK
Resolution override:Slight 2D/menu glitches
MSAA:Slight 2D/menu glitches
Wrapper settings:Default

Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation

Status:OK
Resolution override:Slight 2D/menu glitches
MSAA:Slight 2D/menu glitches
Wrapper settings:Default

Tomb Raider Chronicles

Status:OK
Resolution override:Slight 2D/menu glitches
MSAA:Slight 2D/menu glitches
Wrapper settings:Default

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell

Status:Playable
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:non-Default
Shadow buffering mode works through 'GeForce Ti 4800' preset.
If resolution or antialiasing is forced through dgVoodoo then water rendering gets corrupted. Nothing can be done about that because water rendering method is very sensitive as it dynamically renders the final water image by (among other things) averaging previous water frames, using 1-texel offsets.
There is another issue:
The game gets dropped back to windowed mode at some points so you must play it with manually screen-mode switching enabled and force it back to fullscreen (Alt-Enter).

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell - Pandora Tomorrow

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:non-Default
Maybe it's better to play it with manually screen-mode switching enabled because the game can get pushed back to windowed mode when playing level intro videos.

Toyland Racing

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default

Unreal 2 - The Awakening

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default
A bit slow loading of game scenes.

Unreal Tournament 2004

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:OK
Wrapper settings:Default

Zanzarah: The Hidden Portal

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:Font glitches
Wrapper settings:Default

Zero Divide

Status:OK
Resolution override:OK
MSAA:Slight font glitches
Wrapper settings:Default
Needs the patched executable for playing it through dgVoodoo.
